Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information Matey collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. Matey is operated from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

1. Information we collect

• Account details: your name, email address, and password (handled by our authentication provider, Supabase — we never see your raw password).
• Profile information: your avatar, and, if you become a Matey, your category, skills, one-line pitch, bio, suburb, rate, and portfolio link.
• Job and marketplace activity: jobs you post, quotes and conversations, messages you send, and reviews you leave or receive.
• Payments: for jobs paid through Matey, we keep the amount, our fee, the payment's status and dates, and Stripe's reference numbers. Your card details go straight to Stripe; we never see or store them.
• Matey payout details: if you become a Matey, Stripe collects and verifies your identity and bank details directly. We only store your Stripe account reference and whether you're set up to be paid.
• Location: if you post a job with an in-person location, we store the suburb and an approximate point (randomised for privacy) rather than your exact address.

2. How we use it

We use your information to run the marketplace: creating and displaying profiles, matching jobs with Mateys, powering messaging, showing reviews, and keeping your account secure. We don't sell your personal information.

3. Who we share it with

Matey runs on third-party infrastructure that processes data on our behalf:

• Supabase — hosts our database, authentication, and file storage (avatars).
• Google Maps/Places — used to look up addresses when you post an in-person job.
• Stripe — processes payments, and verifies Mateys' identity and bank details so they can be paid. Stripe handles that information under its own privacy policy.

Other users can see what your profile and public activity are designed to show — your display name, avatar, Matey profile (if you're a Matey), and reviews. We don't share your email address or password with other users.

4. Cookies and local storage

We use your browser's local storage to keep you signed in between visits, via a session token issued by our authentication provider. We don't use tracking or advertising cookies.

5. How long we keep it

We keep your information for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account from Settings, which permanently removes your jobs, conversations, messages, reviews, Matey profile, and account details. The exception is payment records: we keep them for at least five years because tax law requires it, but when you delete your account we remove everything in them that links them to you (your account, the job and the conversation). Stripe also keeps its own records of payments it processed.

6. Your rights

You can review and update your profile information at any time from Customise Profile or your Matey profile, and delete your account and associated data from Settings (anonymised payment records are kept, as explained above). If you'd like help with either, email us at hello@matey.work.

7. Security

We use industry-standard measures — including encrypted connections and access controls on our database — to protect your information, but no online service can guarantee absolute security.

8. Children's privacy

Matey isn't intended for anyone under 18, and we don't knowingly collect information from children.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as the platform grows. We'll update the date below when we do.
